Tuesday 14 August. 2012.
Today, I received a phone call from RatedPeople acknowledging that the work done was indeed, not up to standard.
As a good will gesture, they have offered to send a cheque for an amount which will significantly pay for the repair of the most serious botch-up, namely, the lack of lead on my roof.
They have accepted that the work was not up to an acceptable standard.
In making this acknowledgement and offering to pay an agreed amount, they will clearly have learnt lessons.
Those of us with a background in building, know the problems of competing with the cowboys. For the client, the problems are only apparent, after the job is apparently finished. For the competant operatives, they undercut, take work and leave bad impressions.
A group like RatedPeople has been long needed and many of us will have thought about the problems such groups will face. But this company seems to have failed to fully grasp the actual nature of the problem of finding reliable tradesmen, namely, that cowboys are plausable and convincing.
RatedPeople assumed they could rely on positive recommendations.
It failed when a few positive recommendations didn't describe the nature of the job upon which the recommendation had been based. It might have simply been changing a lightbulb for example.
It failed because the photographs which their workers supplied were not verified to be of their work.
It failed because RatedPeople deleted at least one negative recommendation.
Hopefully, Rated People and others will now realise that, while their service is both welcome and needed, they do need to do a continual and substantial amount of work to identify and eliminate cowboys.
Running a company like RatedPeople will require some work by the proprietors. It isn't an easy way to a fortune.
Rated People will also need address some of the issues raised in forums, not least, the poor customer service and lack of feed back. For that, they will need to read the forums.
I wish them every success. Any organisation which will achieve these deserves our support.
I was asked, by RatedPeople to remove the content from this site. I did spend some time thinking about this.
Given that this site seems to have had a negative effect upon their business, would I be happy to remove it in exchange for a cash payment?
Frankly, if the amount is enough, then yes. I created this site because of problems with the work RatedPeople did. If RatedPeople are now prepared to accept they were in error and compensate, then I will walk away.
If others wish to take up the baton then that is up to them.
